Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry at Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR) plays a vital role in medical education, biomedical research, and clinical diagnostic services. As an essential academic and service department of HIMSR and the associated HAHC Hospital, it provides a strong foundation in basic and clinical biochemistry for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Teaching is delivered through interactive lectures, practical sessions, case-based discussions, and integrated modules that emphasize conceptual clarity, clinical relevance, and applied laboratory skills. For postgraduate training, the department offers comprehensive academic exposure in advanced clinical chemistry, endocrinology, enzymology, molecular diagnostics, laboratory quality systems, and research methodology, along with regular seminars and journal clubs.

Courses Offered

  • MBBS
  • MSc. Medical Biochemistry
  • MD Biochemistry
  • PhD Biochemistry

Research is a core component of the department’s activities, with faculty and students engaged in basic, applied, and translational research in areas such as metabolic disorders, oxidative stress, cancer biomarkers, molecular pharmacology, nutritional biochemistry, cardiovascular biochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory medicine. The department houses well-equipped research facilities including cell culture and molecular biology laboratories, supporting experiments involving mammalian cell culture, cytotoxicity assays, PCR, gel electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, and ELISA-based analyses. Faculty members regularly publish their work in national and international indexed journals and participate in collaborative research projects, conferences, and scientific events that enrich the academic environment.

The Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory at HAHC Hospital, managed by the department, operates round the clock and provides high-quality diagnostic services to support patient care. It includes routine and special biochemistry sections, emergency testing facilities, and point-of-care services. The laboratory is equipped with fully automated analysers, electrochemiluminescence systems, electrolyte analyser, HPLC based HbA1c analyser and ABG analyzers. The laboratory adheres to ISO 15189:2022–based quality management systems and participates in internal and external quality assurance programmes to ensure accuracy, precision, and timely reporting. The department’s faculty, residents, technical staff, and support personnel work collaboratively to uphold the highest standards in teaching, research, and laboratory services, aligning with HIMSR’s mission of excellence in medical education and healthcare delivery.
