On 24th September 2024, the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), New Delhi, witnessed a significant milestone in its healthcare journey with the participation in nationwide virtual inauguration of its Tobacco Cessation Centre by Honourable Health Minister, Shri J. P. Nadda. The event marks a crucial step towards addressing the growing concern of tobacco consumption in India, aligning with the government’s vision of a Tobacco-Free India and Tobacco free youth campaign 2.0.
The inauguration was conducted at college by the Respected Dean of HIMSR, along with the Medical Superintendent, and the Heads of the Community Medicine and Psychiatry Departments. Their combined leadership and vision for holistic healthcare were lauded throughout the event.
The newly inaugurated centre at HIMSR aims to deliver full-fledged tobacco cessation services by offering a range of interventions such as:
- Individual and group counselling sessions to provide psychological support
- Behavioral therapies focused on long-term tobacco cessation
- Nicotine replacement therapies and pharmacological assistance
- Community outreach programs to raise awareness on the dangers of tobacco use
The centre will serve not only patients and attendants visiting HIMSR but will also engage with the local community and nearby regions through awareness campaigns and preventive measures. The Departments of Community Medicine and Psychiatry will play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective delivery of these services, under the guidance of the respective Heads of Departments.
The inauguration of the Tobacco Cessation Centre at HIMSR stands as a testament to the institution’s ongoing efforts to address pressing public health concerns. With the support of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the leadership of HIMSR, the centre is poised to become a key player in the fight against tobacco addiction. This initiative will undoubtedly bring us closer to realizing the dream of a Tobacco-Free India.
