The Hands-on Workshop commenced promptly at 8:00 AM, with Dr. Bhumika Upadhyay, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at HIMSR, serving as the Master of Ceremony and efficiently coordinating the day’s talks and events. The workshop began with a warm welcome address delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Jaspreet Kaur, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, HIMSR. In her address, she greeted the attendees with enthusiasm, introduced the speaker to the participants, and set the stage for an engaging and insightful session. Following this, an ice-breaking session was conducted by Dr. Kailash Chandra, Associate Professor of Biochemistry at HIMSR, which effectively encouraged interaction and set a collaborative tone for the day.

The workshop officially launched with an inspiring keynote lecture by Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Scientist at ICMR, Department of Molecular Diagnostics/Molecular Oncology, National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research. Dr. Kumar’s address focused on the topic, “Essentials of Cell Culture: Basics, Tools, and Techniques for In Vitro Biomedical Research,” providing participants with foundational knowledge critical for biomedical research.

  • One group went for hands on training in mammalian cell culture, which was convened by Dr Kailash Chandra, it included expert talk, cell revival, cell propagation, cell passaging, cell viability assay (trypan blue assay), toxicity assay (MTT Assay), cell counting, cryopreservation, RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, primer designing, PCR, Agarose gel Electrophoresis.
  • Other group went for hands on Protein Electrophoresis: From Isolation to Visualisation & interpretation which was convened by Dr Sajib Kumar Sarkar, Assistant professor, Department of Biochemistry,HIMSR it included expert talk, protein extraction, quantification, SDS- PAGE, visualisation, Plasma protein Electrophoresis, Western blotting, demonstration & interpretation, troubleshooting in experiments.

In the afternoon, an engaging quiz competition for undergraduate MBBS students was organized by Dr Sana Alam, Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, HIMSR. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 11 teams, each comprising three members, hailing from both Delhi and beyond.

The quiz showcased a dynamic blend of knowledge and quick thinking as participants tackled questions spanning various domains, including the biochemical basis of diseases, diagnostic approaches, and clinical case management. Each team demonstrated impressive effort, critical reasoning, and teamwork.

This event was judged by Dr Ajay Kumar Thakral (HOD and Prof of Surgery,HIMSR & HAHCH) and Dr Prem Kapoor (Prof, Department of medicine,HIMSR & HAHCH).
