The Medical Education Unit (MEU) for Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research was formed in 2012.

Objectives of MEU

  • Sensitise teachers about new concepts in teaching and assessment methods.
  • Develop knowledge and clinical skills required for performing the role of competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor.
  • Assist clinicians to acquire competency in communication and behavioural skills.
  • Update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools.

Brief Report

Curriculum Implementation Support Program

Medical Education Unit, HIMSR organized its second Curriculum Implementation Support Program (CISP) from 23rd – 24th September 2020.  It was a two-day program under the aegis of our Regional Center, MAMC, New Delhi.  Prof. Aarti Sood Mahajan, Co-convener, Department of Medical Education and Professor, Department of Physiology, MAMC was the MCI Observer for the workshop. A total of 23 participants, all faculty members of HIMSR attended this workshop.

This two day academic program kicked off with an ice breaking session by Prof Musharraf Husain, MEU Coordinator, HIMSR. He briefed the participants about the workshop and also the guidelines which need to be followed in view of the COVID pandemic including all distancing precautions. This was followed by welcome address by Dean HIMSR, Prof Mridu Dudeja who stressed on the importance of CISP especially for the Phase II faculty.

There were 15 sessions in this 2-day CISP as per the format given by the Medical Council of India. These sessions were conducted by seven facilitators/MEU members  (Prof. Musharraf Husain, Dept of Surgery; Prof. Aruna Nigam,  Dept. of Obs & Gyn; Prof. Sabina Khan, Dept. of Pathology; Prof. Ajay Thakral, Dept. of Surgery; Dr Taskin Khan, Dept of Ophthalmology; Dr. Aqsa Sheikh, Dept of Community Medicine and Dr Shalini Kumar, Dept of Anatomy). All the sessions and hands on exercises were very informative and appreciated by the participants as well as the MCI Observer. It was heartwarming and very reassuring to see the the active participation by the participants.

The program ended with a warm feedback by the participants some of whom also shared their experiences of this two day program. MCI Observer also congratulated the MEU team of HIMSR for a very well conducted CISP II. The program concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the coordinator MEU.

It was a half day programme which started with the introductory message by the Dean, HIMSR, Dr. Anand. He emphasized about balancing internship and preparation for future studies. His talk gave importance to the acquisition of clinical skills and communication competency during internship.

This was then followed by the talk by Dr. Rambha Pathak, HOD, Community Medicine and Incharge, Internship who apprised the interns of the internship and externship rules, attendance, leave entitlements, registration and general guidelines.

Dr. Musharraf Husain, Coordinator MEU, spoke about the Ethics, Etiquettes and Professional conduct. The MCI’s code of conduct was reinforced.

As handling biomedical waste is unavoidable for an intern and a statutory requirement for all healthcare workers and handlers of biomedical waste, a session to review the same was conducted by Dr. Mevash Haider of Hospital Infection Control Committee. She also underlined the importance of hand hygiene.

This was then followed by an extensive session on proper documentation, medico-legal record keeping and certification by Dr. Mir Mujtaba from the department of surgery. He took the interns through step by step process of documentation from admission to discharge of a patient.

The next session was Dr. Zeeba Jairajpuri of Pathology Department who briefed the interns about the various types of forms for ordering investigations, the procedure to fill these forms, the importance of proper sample collection and transport to the laboratory. She was also joined by Head, Pathology, Dr. Sujata Jetley.

As HAHC Hospital is in the process of being NABH-ready, it was pertinent to appraise the interns with the overview of NABH accreditation and their role in it. The same was done by Dr. Mridu Dudeja

The ultimate session was taken by Dr. Musharraf Husain who gave tips on balancing PG preparation without compromising on internship. Some practical and useful tips were shared by him.

The program ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Zakirhusain Shaikh, Member, MEU.

CME on Professionalism & Ethics

Report

A CME on Professionalism and Ethics was organized by MEU, HIMSR on 9th Feb 2017. It was attended by 34 faculty members and Demonstrators including few Heads of the departments.

The workshop started by the Deans address who stressed the importance of work ethics and responsibilities of health professionals. Dr. Musharraf then delivered his talk on Medical Professionalism and cited many examples from his clinical experience.

The second session was facilitated Dr. Prem Kapoor who made his presentation very interesting by discussing various scenarios like euthanasia, surrogacy, resource availability and few others.

The session ended with high tea.

Workshop on Stress and Time Management

Report

A Workshop on Stress and Time Management was organized by MEU, HIMSR on 20 th April 2017. It was attended by 45 participants including faculty,demonstrators and residents
mainly from clinical departments. The first session started by Dr. Sabina Khan who started her presentation beautifully by saying “Let the stress begin” but it turned out to be very de-stressful presentation and appreciated by all. She mentioned about the time management as an integral part of the stress management protocol which later on discussed in detail by Dr. Shobhita. Various tips
and tricks of the time management and its importance in day to day life was stressed by her. Workshop ended with a small exercise to tackle stress at work place.

Brief Report on Revised Basic Course Workshop in Medical Education Technology and AETCOM Sensitization Programme

MEU team of HIMSR organized its first Revised Basic Course workshop (RBCW) in Medical Education Technology along with AETCOM sensitization program from 9th July to 12th July 2018, a 4 day program under the aegis of our Regional Center, MAMC, New Delhi.  Prof. Devender Kumar, Convener, Department of Medical Education, MAMC was the MCI Observer for the workshop. A total of 30 participants, all faculty members of HIMSR attended this workshop.

This four day academic program kicked off with an interesting and interactive session on Group dynamics facilitated by Prof Musharraf Husain, MEU Coordinator, HIMSR. This was followed by a session on Adult learning and system’s approach which was followed by the Inaugural function. The occasion was graced by Prof. M Y Kharadi, Dean HIMSR and Medical Superintendent Dr. Ajaz A Mustafa. Prof. Musharraf briefed participants about the four days’ workshop  and stressed upon the importance of faculty sensitization program.

There were 20 sessions for RBCW and 6 sessions for AETCOM sensitization Programme covering all the topics as per the format of the Medical Council of India. These sessions were conducted by five facilitators (Prof. Musharraf Husain, Dept of Surgery; Prof. Aruna Nigam, Dept. of OBG; Prof. Amit Sharma, Dept. of Forensic Medicine; Dr. Sabina Khan, Dept. of Pathology and Dr.Taskin Khan, Dept. of Ophthalmology ). All the sessions were highly informative and appreciated by the participants and the MCI Observer alike.

At the end of the fourth day, Valedictory function was organized with Prof. Arun Aggarwal, former Dean MAMC as the Chief guest. Dean, HIMSR, Prof. M Y Kharadi, MCI Observer, Prof. Devender Kumar, Coordinator MEU, Prof. Musharraf Husain along with other senior faculty members and HODs of various departments also witnessed the ceremony.

The participants were addressed by the Chief guest, Dean HIMSR and MCI Observer. Few of the participants also shared their experiences of this four day workshop. At the end Certificates were distributed to all the participants by Prof. Aggarwal. The program concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the coordinator MEU.

Brief Report on 2nd Revised Basic Course Workshop in Medical Education Technology and AETCOM Sensitization Program(14th – 17th October 2019)

MEU team of HIMSR organized its second Revised Basic Course workshop (RBCW) in Medical Education Technology along with AETCOM sensitization program from 14th to 17th October 2019, a 4 day program under the aegis of our Regional Center, MAMC, New Delhi.  Dr.Niket Verma from Army College of Medical Sciences was the MCI Observer for the workshop. A total of 30 participants, including 5 MEU members from Govt. Medical college, Greater Noida attended this workshop.

This four day academic program kicked off with an interesting and interactive session on Group dynamics facilitated by Prof Musharraf Husain, MEU Coordinator, HIMSR. This was followed by a session on Adult learning and system’s approach which was followed by the Inaugural function. The occasion was graced by Prof. S S Anand, Dean HIMSR who welcomed the MCI observer and stressed upon the importance of continuing medical education. Dr. Musharraf briefed the participants about the four days’ workshop and discussed its role as faculty development program.

There were 20 sessions for RBCW and 6 sessions for AETCOM sensitization Program covering all the topics as per the format of the Medical Council of India. These sessions were conducted by five facilitators (Dr. Musharraf Husain, Prof. & HOD Surgery; Dr. Aruna Nigam, Prof. OBG; Dr. Amit Sharma, Prof. Forensic Medicine; Dr. M Shobitha, Prof. Physiology; Dr. S Kohli, Prof. Medicine; Dr. Sabina Khan, Assoc. Prof. Pathology; Dr. Shalini Kumar, Assoc. Prof. Anatomy, Dr.Taskin Khan, AP, Ophthalmology; Dr. Azra, AP Microbiology and Dr. Aqsa Shaikh, AP Community Medicine) . All the sessions were very informative and interactive with many videos and roleplays. It was highly appreciated by the participants and the MCI Observer alike. Feedback of the sessions were taken on all four days, analyzed and discussed with the participants. Power point presentations and other resource materials were shared with the participants.

At the end of the fourth day, Valedictory function was organized with Prof. S S Anand, Dean HIMSR as the Chief guest. MCI Observer, Dr. Niket Verma, Coordinator MEU, Prof. Musharraf Husain along with other senior faculty members also attended the ceremony.

The participants were addressed by the Dean HIMSR and MCI Observer. Few of the participants also shared their experiences of this four day workshop. At the end Certificates were distributed to all the participants by Prof. S S Anand. The program concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the coordinator MEU.

CME on Objective Structured Clinical examination (OSCE)

 

A CME on Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was conducted by Medical Education Unit, HIMSR on 16th January 2021. In view of COVID and Physical distancing norms, it was done using online mode through Zoom A total of 62 participants attended the CME. This was facilitated by MEU Coordinator, Dr. Musharraf Husain. The CME started with an address by the Dean HIMSR who stressed upon the importance of OSCE as an assessment tool. Dr. Musharraf gave a brief overview of Assessment before discussing in detail about the organization of OSCE and how it can used both as formative and summative assessment. This was followed by question answer session.
