Empowering Choices: A Day on Advance Care Planning

A one-day workshop on “Advance Care Planning” was conducted by Hospital Bioethics Committee of HIMSR and HAHC Hospital. It was attended by 32 people, which included participants from diverse disciplines such as those working in ICU settings, Paediatricians, Forensic Medicine, ANMs, Physiotherapists, and Community Medicine.

The key note address was given by Dr Musharraf Husain, Dean, HIMSR. He spoke about his own experiences in Advance Care Planning (ACP) and sensitised the participants about various issues and opportunities. An interactive session on ethics was taken by Dr Aqsa Shaikh where the major principles of ethics such as autonomy, beneficence, justice and non-maleficence was discussed. Special emphasis on Autonomy was given as one of the crucial components of Advance Care Planning. After the sensitisation, the detailed sessions on Advance Care Planning, Advance Medical Directive, Living Will were taken by the spokespersons from Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy which included Dr Dhvani Mehta, Hardik Dua and Shireen Yachu. It was followed by question-and-Answer Sessions. The participants took part actively. Then the final session on “Palliative Care” was taken by Dr Smriti Khanna. It was followed by question-and-answer session. The Concluding remarks were given by Dr Aqsa Shaikh and senior residents Dr Asma Aftab and Dr Manpreet Singh.
