Milestone Achievement: First Therapeutic Penetrating Keratoplasty at HIMSR & HAHC Hospital

We are proud to announce a significant milestone in the history of the Department of Ophthalmology at HIMSR & HAHC Hospital —First successful Therapeutic Penetrating Keratoplasty (TPK). It was performed in a patient with non-healing corneal ulcer unresponsive to maximal medical management, establishing corneal transplantation as a viable treatment modality within the institute and paving the way for future advancements in ocular surface and corneal surgeries.
The surgery involved the removal of the diseased corneal tissue harbouring infection and necrosis, followed by transplantation of a healthy donor corneal button. The procedure not only controlled the infectious process but also preserved the structural integrity of the globe.
Therapeutic Keratoplasty is a specialized surgical procedure where a diseased or infected cornea is replaced with a donor corneal graft to restore ocular integrity and prevent complications such as corneal perforation or severe vision loss. This advanced intervention plays a critical role in managing severe corneal infections, corneal ulcers unresponsive to medical therapy, and other sight-threatening corneal pathologies.
Our team of experienced ophthalmologists performed this complex and delicate procedure using state-of-the-art equipment in our fully equipped operating theatre. The successful surgery marks a new chapter in delivering advanced eye care services at HAHC Hospital, expanding our capacity to manage challenging corneal diseases with precision and compassion.
