The Department of Ophthalmology at HIMSR successfully performed its second Therapeutic Penetrating Keratoplasty (TPK) on a 52-year-old male patient presenting with perforated ulcerative keratitis. At presentation, the patient had severe corneal infection with perforation and vision was reduced to hand movements only necessitating urgent surgical intervention to preserve the integrity of the eye and restore visual potential.
The therapeutic keratoplasty was performed successfully without any intraoperative complications. The procedure was completed smoothly through the coordinated efforts of the entire surgical team led by Dr Alisha Rizvi along with our nursing, and technical team, reflecting the department’s commitment to delivering advanced corneal care.
In the immediate postoperative period, the patient is comfortable, the corneal graft appears to be taking up well, and patients’ vision on post op day 3 was noted to be 6/18. The successful outcome of this challenging case highlights the growing expertise and collaborative spirit of the cornea services at HIMSR in managing complex ocular emergencies.
