Report of Hands on Workshop “Obstetric skills: tips and tricks”

 

“The department of Obstetrics and Genecology at Hamdard Institute of Medical Science and Research, Delhi organized a one day (9-5 PM)workshop on “Obstetric skills: tips and tricks” on 30th October 2021 at Central skill Lab of the hospital. This conference was attended by 50 delegates (including faculty). There were 24 candidates from different hospitals of Delhi NCR, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (Aligarh, Lucknow, Ghaziabad). The candidates were mainly postgraduates and Senior residents. The focus was on interactive teaching and small group hands on sessions and personal attention to each candidate.

There were 2 sessions: Lectures supported by video demonstration of procedure followed immediately by heads on session on dummies/tissues. Lectures of the first session were taken by Dr Pallavi Gupta, Dr Nidhi Gupta, Dr Neha Gupta, Dr Arifa Anwar, Prof Aruna Nigam. In first Hands on session on forceps delivery, ventouse delivery, shoulder dystocia, balloon tamponade, hemostatic sutures, stepwise devascularization and internal iliac artery ligation, were taught in various indigenous dummies following Peyton’s approach.

Second session lectures were taken by Prof Reva Tripathi, Dr Sumedha Sharma, Dr Arpita De, Dr Musharraf Hussain, Prof Aruna Nigam. Second session was mainly on animal tissues in which caesarean section, bladder repair and complete perineal tear repair were taught. Bladder repair training was given by Dr Shazib Faridi.

All the delegates were astonished to see and learn procedures on indigenous, innovative, state of art dummies and animal tissues. There was positive feedback from all the candidates with a request for more frequent such workshops and many requested to conduct similar conference for gynecological procedures. Delegates felt overwhelmed on having personalized attention and interaction with highly trained faculty of the department.
